Andi Schmied pretended to be a billionaire to infiltrate NYC’s most exclusive and expensive homes, which only cater to the unbelievably wealthy and privileged.

Touring homes up to $85 million, she wanted to see and photograph how the 1% of the 1% lives in one of the most iconic and expensive cities in the world.

To do so, she had to transform herself from an artist into a convincing billionaire almost overnight. But while snapping 25 penthouses she discovered a world of high-rise apartments sitting empty in a city facing a housing crisis.

Mackenzie Shirilla has been sentenced to 15-years-to-life in prison for the deadly 2022 crash that claimed the lives of 20-year-old Dominic Russo and 19-year-old Davion Flanagan.

Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Nancy Margaret Russo sentenced Shirilla to 15-years-to-life in prison for both murder charges she was found guilty of, with the two sentences to be served concurrently. She will also receive credit for time already served and have her driver's license permanently suspended.

The sentencing means that Shirilla will first be eligible for parole in 15 years.

Family members of both victims addressed the court at Monday's sentencing, as did Shirilla's mother. A sobbing Shirilla read a statement apologizing to the families involved.

"To the families of Dom and Davion, I am so deeply sorry," she said. "I hope one day you can see how I'd never let this happen or do it on purpose. I wish I could remember what happened. I'm just so sorry. I'm heartbroken. I loved Dom and Davion. We were all friends and Dom was my soulmate. I wish I could take all your pain away. I am so sorry. And to my family, thank for the support and all the love you guys give. Thank you for fighting with me. I love you all so much."

Monday's sentencing comes one week after Russo found Shirilla guilty of all counts -- including four counts of murder, four counts of felonious assault and two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide.

“This was not reckless driving. This was murder," Judge Russo said moments before announcing her verdict in the bench trial on Aug. 14.

It's a case that dates back to Sunday, July 31, 2022, when Strongsville police say a crash happened at 6:15 a.m. near the intersection of Progress and Alameda. Upon their arrival, officers say they located a Toyota Camry “with severe damage and full airbag deployments.”

All three occupants inside the vehicle -- including Shirilla -- were unconscious, not breathing and trapped inside the vehicle. Russo (Shirilla's boyfriend) and Flanagan were both pronounced dead at the scene.

“The video clearly shows the purpose and intent of the defendant," Judge Russo said. "She chose a course of death and destruction that day.”

Shirilla was 17 years old at the time of the crash.

"She morphs from a responsible driver to literal hell on wheels as she makes her way down the street," Judge Russo continued during her verdict announcement. "Mackenzie alone made the decision to drive the car, to drive an obscure route, a route she visited a few days before, and a route not routinely taken by her. Mackenzie alone chose a time to make the drive, early in the morning, when any reasonable person would expect a few people would be nearby to witness it or offer life-saving assistance. She made these decisions despite knowing, as any reasonable person would, that her mission of death could've involved others not even in the car with her -- other people, other cars, pedestrians."

Judge Russo said Shirilla had "a mission" and "executed it with precision."

"Mackenzie alone decided to push the pedal to the floor and demand the ultimate speed of that vehicle to 92 mph. She alone decided what was to be. Mackenzie decided death was the ultimate goal that day, and she alone made that decision for Dominic and Davion."

The prosecution had said Shirilla crashed the car to end her toxic and tumultuous relationship with Russo.

"There is no doubt that this happened because of the relationship with Dominic and the defendant’s intent was clearly to end that, and she took everybody that was in the car with her," said Tim Troup of the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's Office.

At Monday's sentencing, family members of the victims asked the judge for consecutive sentences, while the prosecution pointed to Shirilla's social media posts after the accident as evidence that she had shown a lack of remorse for her actions. Shirilla's mother, Nathalie, apologized to the victims' families for the situation they were in, but also defended herself against accusations that she was more concerned with the perception on social media than the deaths of the two victims.

Russo said that her toughest decision in the sentencing came down to whether or not to have the two 15-year sentences run consecutively or concurrently. While she ultimately opted to have them run concurrently, she also said that she believes there's a "very good likelihood" Shirilla will spend the rest of her life in prison.

Shirilla's case has captured widespread attention with news of her guilty verdict appearing on various national sites, including People.com and The Daily Beast.

Best actor nominee Will Smith appeared to slap presenter Chris Rock in the face with an open hand and shouted a vulgarity at the comedian for making a joke about his wife's appearance at the Oscars ceremony.

Rock made a joke about the hairstyle of Smith's wife Jada Pinkett Smith that referenced the movie GI Jane in which actress Demi Moore shaved her head. Pinkett Smith suffers from the hair loss condition, alopecia. Smith, who later won best actor for 'King Richard,' walked on stage and hit Chris Rock in what at first appeared to be a scripted joke. But the mood turned somber moments later when Smith, back in his seat, shouted back, 'Keep my wife's name out of your fucking mouth'

I took a photo every day from age 12 until I got married.
⚠ TURN ON SUBTITLES / CLOSED CAPTIONS
⚠ Try watching at different speeds (0.5x, 1.5x or 2x!)

🌟 FAQ:

Q) How is your face always in the centre?
A) I stabilized each photo manually, frame by frame (notice how the borders are always moving?). It took me around 50+ hours in total for this video. I posted a video explaining the process in detail here: https://youtu.be/FGXGHYonfGM?t=2m16s

Q) Why don't you smile?
A) Mainly for consistency. From the beginning, I planned to have the same expression in every photo, and it's easier to keep a straight face than it is to smile in the same way each time. Secondly, I wanted to capture the physical changes in my face, while avoiding the emotional changes in my life.

Q) Why did you start? What gave you the idea?
A) In 2008, I watched Noah Kalina's project here on YouTube, and I decided to start my own that focuses on myself aging, since I was still young at the time. I was also motivated by wanting to document my life, and to be able to show this to my family in the future.

Q) Do you plan to keep going forever? Will you ever stop?
A) I have no intention of stopping. The plan is to continue this project forever.

Q) Where are you from?
A) I was born in London, England, but have spent most of my life in Canada. I'm currently living in Fredericton, Canada.

Q) How old were you when you were married?
A) I was 21, but turned 22 less than a month later.

Q) How did you graduate High School at 16 / start college at 17?
A) I'm not some kind of genius, I just went to high school in Montreal, where it ends in Grade 11 (one year earlier than the rest of Canada and the USA). I was also born right before the cutoff, so I was younger than everybody else. As for college, in Quebec, there's something called CeGep, which is basically a middle ground between High School and University. We refer to it as College. So unfortunately, I wasn't a child prodigy as many comments seemed to think, lol.

When Massachusetts Institute of Technology dropout Alexandr Wang made the Forbes 30 Under 30 Enterprise Technology list in 2018, his startup Scale used artificial intelligence to begin automating tasks like image recognition and audio transcription. Back then, its customers included GM Cruise, Alphabet, Uber, P&G and others

Now Wang, 25, is the youngest self-made billionaire. And while he still partners with buzzy companies, today he’s got $350 million in government defense contracts. This has helped Scale hit a $7.3 billion valuation, and give Wang a $1 billion net worth (as he owns 15% of the company).

Scale’s technology analyzes satellite images much faster than human analysts to determine how much damage Russian bombs are causing in Ukraine. It’s useful not just for the military. More than 300 companies, including General Motors and Flexport, use Scale, which Wang started when he was 19, to help them pan gold from rivers of raw information—millions of shipping documents, say, or raw footage from self-driving cars. “Every industry is sitting on huge amounts of data,” Wang says, who appeared on the Forbes Under 30 list in 2018. “Our goal is to help them unlock the potential of the data and supercharge their businesses with AI.”

How Apple and Nike have branded your brain
Watch the newest video from Big Think: https://bigth.ink/NewVideo
Learn skills from the world's top minds at Big Think Edge: https://bigth.ink/Edge
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Powerful branding can not only change how you feel about a company, it can actually change how your brain is wired.

"We love to think of ourselves as rational. That's not how it works," says UPenn professor Americus Reed II about our habits (both conscious and subconscious) of paying more for items based primarily on the brand name. Effective marketing causes the consumer to link brands like Apple and Nike with their own identity, and that strong attachment goes deeper than receipts.

Using MRI, professor and neuroscientist Michael Platt and his team were able to see this at play. When reacting to good or bad news about the brand, Samsung users didn't have positive or negative brain responses, yet they did have "reverse empathy" for bad news about Apple. Meanwhile, Apple users showed a "brain empathy response for Apple that was exactly what you'd see in the way you would respond to somebody in your family."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TRANSCRIPT:

NARRATOR: Coke is just soda. Tylenol is just acetaminophen. And Levi's are just jeans. Yet consumers go out of their way to select these specific brands over others.

AMERICUS REED II: An economist would say,"How is this possible, that a rational consumer would be willing to pay more for exactly the same thing?" We love to think about ourselves as rational. That's not how it works.

A very famous study done by colleagues at Duke University flashed either the Apple logo or the IBM logo to two randomized groups of participants.

NARRATOR: The study found that after being subliminally exposed to the Apple logo, compared to when you'd been exposed to the IBM logo, participants performed better on creative tasks.

AMERICUS REED II: And the argument is that Apple has been telling you this story over and over again, that Apple is the brand for hip, cool, fun, creative people.

NARRATOR: This is the true power of brands. They can influence our behavior in ways that extend way beyond the point of sale. So to what degree can the influence of brands wreak havoc on our ability to make rational spending decisions? This is your brain on money.

This is Americus Reed. He studies identity and marketing at the University of Pennsylvania.

AMERICUS REED II: When I make choices about different brands, I'm choosing to create an identity. When I put that shirt on, when I put those shoes on, those jeans, that hat, someone is going to form an impression about what I'm about. So if I'm choosing Nike over Under Armour, I'm choosing a kind of different way to express affiliation with sport.

The Nike thing is about performance. The Under Armour thing is about the underdog. I have to choose which of these different conceptual pathways is most consistent with where I am in my life.

NARRATOR: And once a consumer makes that choice, their relationship with a brand can deepen to the point where they identify with that brand like family. And once you identify with a brand, it can shape the way you behave.

AMERICUS REED II: And it's really interesting because they will also, if someone talks bad about that product, brand, or service, they will be the first to go out and defend. Why? Because an attack on the brand is an attack on themselves.

NARRATOR: Michael Platt is a professor of neuroscience, marketing, and psychology whose research demonstrates how our perception of brands influences our decisions.

MICHAEL PLATT: There's an idea in marketing, which is that we relate to brands in the same way we relate to people. It's like, "I love this brand," or, "I hate this brand." Of course, what people say can often be different from what's really going on in their heads.

So we thought, "Well, why don't we just ask the brain directly?"

NARRATOR: Michael and his team observed the brains of iPhone users and Samsung Galaxy users with an MRI machine while they heard good, bad, and neutral news about Apple and Samsung.

MICHAEL PLATT: Apple customers showed a brain empathy response toward Apple that was exactly what you'd see in the way you would respond to somebody in your own family.

NARRATOR: Strangely, Samsung users didn't have any positive or negative responses when good or bad news was released about their brand. The only evidence that Samsung users showed was reverse empathy for Apple news. Meaning if the Apple headline was negative, their brain reflected a positive response.

MICHAEL PLATT: You know, it really shows us that Apple has completely defined the market here. Samsung customers, it seems, from their brain data, are only buying Samsung...
